Overview

Almaty is a glittering city framed by the snow-capped peaks of the Zailiyskiy Alatau range. Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty derives its name from the Kazakh word for apples, a fruit that this place is best known for. When in Almaty, don't forget to visit the Big Almaty Lake, 15 kilometres away from the main city. This milky-turquoise lake is surrounded by greenery and the Tien Shan mountain range. A major source of drinking water, the Big Almaty Lake is a protected waterbody guarded by the army. The highest point of the city, Kok Tobe Hill offers panoramic views of Almaty. You can take a short trip to Kok Tobe Park for a fun visit to its petting zoo, art gallery or the roller coaster.
